Full form of TIR is Total Internal Reflection.

When the ray of light passing from optically denser medium to an optical rarer medium is incident at angle greater than critical angle, the ray of light instead of getting refracted is totally internally reflected into the same medium. This phenomenon is known as Total Internal Reflection of light.

When a ray of light passes from denser medium into a rarer medium, it bends away from the normal. As the angle of incidence in the denser medium increases, angle of refraction in the rarer medium also goes on increasing till we find that for a certain angle of incidence in the denser medium, the angle of refraction becomes 90°.

The angle of incidence in the denser medium for which angle of refraction in the rarer medium is 90° is known as critical angle.
